Austin Hunter: Conquering College and Racing

By Chanda Healton

Austin Hunter is a young and determined Naskart racer from Texas. With 10 years racing experience, a loyal wife and  confidence on his side, Hunter is often found spending time in Victory Lane! Meet Our Driver of the week for 6/12/2016

1) How did you get started in racing and what series or tracks do you race on regularly?
I started racing 10 years ago when an indoor karting track opened near me. I tried it once and was instantly addicted.
I am currently running in the Naskart Pro Racing Series. We are a touring karting series out of Texas. We race 9 oval races at Central Texas Speedway and 9 road course races between San Antonio, Katy, and Denton, Texas
2)  Tell me a little about your car number and how you chose it?
My number is 27. I chose this because in 2011 I raced in the US Indoor Karting Championship and I placed in 27th place. I used this as my number as I reminder that I can do better than the next year. Sadly in 2012 the event was cancelled so I never had a chance to lower my number, then I just fell in love with it!
3)  Who sponsors you and why are they special to you?
My sponsors are Track 21 Houston and DJ U Productions. Track 21 has been with me since 2011 as they sponsored me for the USIKC. Each year since we have worked out a partnership for my other racing endeavors. I value their partnership dearly and I couldn't have done near as many races without them.
DJ U Has been with me since 2014 we have partnered through several different events and we have continued our partnership this year. Without their help I would have failed to finish top 5 in points last season.
4) Who has been your biggest support throughout your career?
I have had several big supporters throughout my career, but I would have to say my wife Emilie. She comes to almost every race and helps me keep my head in the game when things aren't going right.
5) Is there a famous race car driver you like to compare yourself to? Who and why?
I would have to say Terry Labonte. the Iceman is one of my favorite drivers and you never see him lose his composure towards another driver
6) Do you have a website fans can visit?
7) What advice would you give a young kid wanting to be a racecar driver?
Get started early! stay smooth and stay confident.
8)  If you weren't driving a racecar, what do you think you would be doing with your life?
I am currently a student at Texas State University for a degree in Recreation Administration
9) What is your biggest moment in your racing career?
Winning the 2013 Sodi World Series National Championship. Over 450 drivers competed, it was a standout year for me where I won 11 of 14 races.
10)  Where do you see yourself in 10 yearsand what will it take to get there?
I see myself still racing. Hopefully more national events. More recognition and sponsors, I have showed I have the skill set when the right equipment is under me and I hope to continue onto my career path and own or manage a race track.
